Why are gutters important? We as inspectors love to see them installed and working properly because they help to control water. Water that erodes soil, creates pools, or isn’t removed from the side of the foundation can cause issues.
Turndowns help to create controlled directional velocity to guide the water away from the home. A gutter that terminates straight down can lead to erosion issues as the force of the water coming down the gutter is very strong. To assist the turndown to move the water away from the foundation, splashblocks are added to the system.
Backwards splashblocks slow the flow of water and can create pooling. Mosquitoes love pooling. Especially if your sprinkler system is constantly replenishing that small pool.
